When is a shirt service worth it?
Ironing a shirt properly at home takes a good ten to fifteen minutes. If you wear five business shirts a week, you spend more than an hour a week at the ironing board. For CHF 19.50 a week, that hour is yours again – and the shirts look consistent, collars and cuffs included.
The service is especially handy before events: bring your shirt and suit together, and have anything that doesn’t fit adjusted at the same time (see Suit alterations).
How to make shirts last longer
- Take out collar stays before washing – they bend and press through the fabric.
- Let deodorant dry before you put the shirt on. Aluminium salts cause yellow stains under the arms.
- Don’t wear the same shirt two days in a row. A day’s rest on the hanger lets the fibres and creases relax.
- Don’t scrub the dirt line on the collar: that roughens the fibres. We treat the line before washing.
- Don’t use the tumble dryer if you wash them yourself: heat shrinks cotton and makes creases harder to iron out.
Which shirts should be dry cleaned
We don’t wash shirts and blouses made of silk or delicate linen, or with embroidery, sequins or metallic threads – we dry clean them instead. That protects their colour and shape. Check the care label: a crossed-out washtub means “do not wash”. More: Dry cleaning & textile cleaning in Lucerne.
